 IAS Officer Exam Process

To become an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, one needs to follow the following steps:

Eligibility: Candidates must be an Indian citizen and have completed a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

Age limit: The age limit for candidates is between 21 years and 32 years on August 1 of the year of examination. Age relaxations are available for candidates belonging to reserved categories.

Preparation: IAS exam is one of the toughest competitive exams in India. Candidates need to prepare thoroughly for the exam. It is recommended to join a coaching institute or study group for guidance.

Exam Pattern: The IAS exam is conducted in three stages:

i) Preliminary exam: It is a multiple-choice test that comprises two papers, each of 200 marks. The questions are based on general studies and aptitude.

ii) Mains exam: Candidates who clear the preliminary exam are eligible to appear for the mains exam. It consists of 9 papers, including one qualifying language paper and two optional papers.

iii) Interview: The final stage of the selection process is the interview. Candidates who clear the mains exam are called for an interview by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Clearing the exam: Candidates who clear all three stages of the exam are eligible to become an IAS officer.

Training: Candidates who are selected for IAS undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, for a period of two years. After training, candidates are allotted to various government departments and agencies.
