What are the 23 civil services?

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) recruits candidates to 23 different services or departments of the Government of India. All India Services (AIS)

1.Indian Administrative Service (IAS): The IAS is considered to be the most prestigious service among all the civil services in India. The officers of the IAS are responsible for the administration of the various districts and states of India.




2.Indian Police Service (IPS): The IPS is responsible for maintaining law and order and preventing crime in the country. The officers of the IPS are responsible for the administration of the police force in their respective states.


3.Indian Forest Service (IFS): The IFS is responsible for the protection and management of the forests and wildlife in the country. The officers of the IFS are responsible for the administration of the forests and wildlife in their respective states.



4.Indian Revenue Service (IRS): The IRS is responsible for administering the tax laws in India.



5.Indian Postal Service (IPoS): The IPoS is responsible for managing the postal services in the country.

6.Indian Trade Service (ITS): The ITS is responsible for promoting India's trade and commerce with other countries.

7.Indian Information Service (IIS): The IIS is responsible for managing the government's communication and information dissemination.

8.Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS): The IDAS is responsible for managing the accounts of the defence forces in India.

9.Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS): The IOFS is responsible for managing the ordnance factories in India.

10.Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS): The IRTS is responsible for managing the traffic and transportation services of the Indian Railways.

11.Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS): The IRAS is responsible for managing the accounts of the Indian Railways.

12.Central Secretariat Service (CSS): The CSS is responsible for providing administrative support to various ministries and departments of the Government of India.

13.Central Industrial Security Force (CISF): The CISF is responsible for providing security and protection to various government installations and public sector undertakings.

14.Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB): The SSB is responsible for guarding India's borders with Nepal and Bhutan.


15.Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS): The IA&AS is responsible for auditing the accounts of the central and state governments.

16.Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS): The ICAS is responsible for managing the accounts of the central government.

17.Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES): The IDES is responsible for managing the defence land and properties in India.

18.Indian Information Technology Service (IITS): The IITS is responsible for managing the information technology services of the Government of India.

19.Indian Meteorological Department (IMD): The IMD is responsible for providing weather forecasts and warnings in India.

20.Indian P&T Accounts and Finance Service (IP&TAFS): The IP&TAFS is responsible for managing the accounts and finance of the Department of Telecommunications and the Department of Posts.

21.Indian P&T Service (IP&TAFS): The IP&T Service is responsible for managing the telecommunication services in India.

22.Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise): The IRS (C&CE) is responsible for administering the customs and central excise laws in India.

23.Indian Statistical Service (ISS). The ISS is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating statistical data related to various sectors of the Indian economy. They are also responsible for providing inputs to the government in the formulation of policies related to different sectors based on their statistical analysis.
